Stepping out of History

Apple CEO Steve Jobs made a surprise public appearance on Wednesday to announce the debut of iPad 2 which will be launched on March 11 in the United States and on March 25 in 26 other countries.

There’s a lot of speculation about Jobs’ health, but nothing definitive and official has been said about it.  Presumably Apple is worried that negative news will affect the company since Jobs has always been the life and soul of it.   He looked thinner and more frail than he did the last time he spoke in public, and almost ghostly, but  he spoke with energy, enthusiasm and his usual articulacy, connecting with his audience as well as ever.  He got a standing ovation, of course.

He said the iPad 2 isn’t just a rehashing of something old, not just a remake with a few tweaks here and there.  It’s a totally new lighter and thinner design with an A5 chip, two processors and graphics that will be nine times faster than the first iPad.  It comes in black and white with a Photo Booth program and Apple’s FaceTime chat app and two cameras, one on the front and one on the back.  It also has a smart cover – a thin sheet that attaches with magnets and that can fold into a stand – and comes in the polyurethane that is used to make space-suits or leather.

iPad 2 can be hooked up to a television as it has an HDMI accessory, which makes it useful for teachers wanting to connect it to their flatscreens, and it also can be recharged whilst in use.   The battery life is ten hours, the same as the first iPad.  It will also include a gyroscope which, with the changes to the processor, will enhance the gaming capabilities of the device.

On the same day that iPad 2 is released a new operating system will be also - iOS 4.3.  Jobs said the iPhone 4 users will be able to create Wi-Fi hotspots to share wireless internet with other gadgets.

When the first iPad was launched, Apple got a great head start in the tablet race, but recently competition has been closing the gap.  Apple hopes to get ahead again with the iPad 2 – not only in what it is, but its price.  Remarkably, it will sell for the same price as iPad.

Apple got a huge head start in the touchscreen tablet race with its iPad, but in recent months, rivals have begun catching up.  Samsung’s Galaxy Tab was released late last year, Motorola Mobility’s Xoom last month, and Blackberry is expected to launch its own tablet in spring.  Altogether it has been estimated that as many as 64 different manufacturers have 102 tablets on the market or in design.

But Apple sold 14.8 million iPads around the world in the first nine months, and they are hoping to sell in the region of 30 million this year, and to stay ahead in the race.
